⚖️ Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
Marathon line has lifetime tank warranty — one of the best in the industry
Performance Platinum offers 12-year coverage, the longest standard tier
Warranty is transferable to new homeowners ($25 fee within 30 days of closing)
ProtectionPlus upgrade adds 4 years of coverage plus labor
❌ Cons
Classic/Performance series only gets 6 years — the most common models
Tankless electric only 5-year heat exchanger, 1-year parts — weak
Replacement unit only covers the unexpired portion of the original warranty
ProtectionPlus upgrade kit must be installed at initial installation — can't add later
💡 Dwelltory Pro Tips
- 📌 Know your series before you buy — The warranty difference between Classic (6 years) and Performance Platinum (12 years) is massive. Ask your installer which series they're putting in — don't assume.
- 📌 ProtectionPlus must be installed at time of purchase — This $150-250 upgrade kit extends coverage by 4 years and adds labor. But it requires physical installation during initial setup. You can't add it after the fact.
- 📌 Ruud = Rheem — If you have a Ruud water heater, you have a Rheem water heater. Same factory, same warranties, same claims process. Don't be confused if your plumber installs Ruud.
- 📌 Water heater warranties typically don't cover anode rod failure — This is the #1 reason tanks corrode. Replace the anode rod every 3-5 years (a $30-50 DIY part) to prevent a failure that warranty won't cover.
